Walk into any electronics store today and you will see shelves of "smart bulbs" promising millions of colours, voice control, and scheduling. A few may even advertise "circadian" or "daylight" modes. The prices range from ?500 to ?5,000. And the marketing all sounds remarkably similar.

So what separates a true circadian lighting system from a regular smart bulb? The difference is not in the hardware specifications you see on the box. It is in the architecture, intelligence, and intent behind the system. Here is what you need to know.

1. Single Point vs. Whole-Home Orchestration

Smart bulbs are individual devices. Each bulb has its own processor, its own schedule, and its own connection to your Wi-Fi or Zigbee hub. The app exists for occasional overrides and monitoring, but the system runs perfectly whether or not your phone is in the house.

Smart bulbs are cheaper upfront - typically ?500-2,000 per bulb. A 10-bulb home costs ?5,000-20,000. However, smart bulbs have a higher failure rate due to the integrated electronics in each bulb, and replacing them means re-pairing and reconfiguring. Over five years, you may replace bulbs 2-3 times.

Circadian systems have a higher initial investment - the central controller, sensors, and professional-grade fixtures cost more. But the fixtures are built to last 25,000-50,000 hours, the sensors never need replacing, and the system improves over time through software updates. The energy savings alone (25-40% reduction) offset a significant portion of the cost within 2-3 years.

Which Should You Choose?

If you rent, have a limited budget, or want to experiment with smart lighting, a few smart bulbs with scheduling are a reasonable starting point. They will give you a taste of what is possible.

If you own your home, care about the quality of light, and want a system that truly supports your wellness without demanding your attention, a circadian lighting system is in a different league entirely.
